School Districts Community Information The Town of Cortlandt is located in the northwest corner of Westchester County, about 33 miles from New York City. It occupies not quite 41 square miles of rolling, rural territory, much of which is strechted out along the banks of the mighty Hudson River, offering breath taking panoramic views overlooking the river. The Town is comprised of the two villages Croton-on-Hudson and Buchanan, plus several hamlets, such as Cortland Manor, Verplanck, Montrose and Crugers.
This beautiful area has been made accessable by several well maintained major highways, such as the Taconic Parkway, Route 9, Route 6, Route 202, and the Bear Mountain Parkway. The Metro-North Hudson Line also connects the area via the Croton-Harmon Train Station and the Cortlandt Train Station with NYC and Upstate New York, accommodating the daily rush of commuters. The town is also served by the Westchester Bee-Line Bus Service with numerous stops throughout it's various sections. Scenic Cortlandt is the most populated of the Northern Westchester County communities. A wide range and selection of affordable housing can be found, some sprinkeled around green open spaces, others bordering wooded areas, and more near ponds, lakes and the river. Built in 1928, New Croton Dam in Croton Gorge Park is the world's second largest hand-hewn stone structure holding back up to 19 billion gallons (71.9 million m³) of water at full capacity. The George's Island Park boasts within it's 185 acres a public boat launching facility and is very popular for it's picnicking, boating, fishing and hiking. Several other large and small parks, such as Pine Lake and Oscawana, offer excellent recreation as well. Town residents also have playing rights at the Hollowbrook Mews Golf Course, a very challenging and otherwise private layout. The very busy Cortlandt Town Center features an impressive selection of shops, restaurants as well as an 11 screen movie theatre. Conveniently located on Route 6, it has become a focal point of the local economic scene. Another stretch of good and varied shopping can be found along Route 202. The town is served by four Puplic School Districts: The Lakeland School District, The Hendrick Hudson School District, The Croton Harmon School District and The Peekskill City School District. Furthermore there are a number of very good daycare centers, private and parochial schools, and the BOCES Vocational Program. |
